Doubt the groundswell, understand the groundswell, become the groundswell
What is the Groundswell?
How do people participate in the groundswell? You will have this question when you see my title, and I will answer you through my ordinary day.
Last week, I used WeChat to inquire if anyone from the hiking club would be interested in joining me to visit the nearby Green Hill Park. As I had hoped, I met a friendly girl, and we agreed to go together this weekend. However, the weather turned cold, and I didn't have a jacket. I quickly checked Amazon reviews and chose the most suitable one. Wearing this jacket, I took pictures of the scenery with my friend and shared them on Instagram. When I got back home, I discovered that the zipper of my jacket was broken. I was very unhappy, so I left a one-star negative review for the seller and advised other customers not to buy from this brand anymore. That's how I concluded my ordinary day.
This is exactly what Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff say in the third chapter of Groundswell: winning in a world transformed by social technologies. I use WeChat for communication and to make new friends. I joined a club because of my interest in hiking. I provide feedback and reviews through comments when shopping. I also post content to analyze life and try to grab people's attention. That's how I participated in the Groundswell.

Just before the fall semester began, I was on the hunt for an affordable room close by university with trustworthy housemates. So, I turned to a WeChat group to help me in my quest for the perfect room and in result, I was able to find the room I was looking for. It's an example of how I used people, technology, and the economy to achieve my goal.

ReplyDeleteI have heard of the WeChat platform in the past but did not really know that it had the ability to connect people in the way that you described. I find it truly fascinating how people connect with one another and how that has evolved with the inclusion of new technologies. Coming from a Latin American country the idea of community has always existed in my life and the notion of the groundswell has always existed, perhaps not with technology but at its core. I found your blog post to be very insightful and I really liked how you highlighted the strategies for engaging with the groundswell.

DeleteThank you for your comment. In fact, WeChat is similar to WhatsApp. Both can make video calls, send pictures, and send files. They can be used to communicate with each other. It also has the function of depositing money, and payment can be made through a WeChat QR code in China.
